Top 4 Bike Paths and Trails Near Hendersonville, NC

1. Pisgah National Forest Trails

Centered around Mount Pisgah at its heart, and with many miles of forested mountains to explore, Pisgah National Forest is one of the best places to mountain bike in the entirety of Western North Carolina. There are numerous trails throughout the forest, but to take in it all try the challenging Pisgah Long Tour, which takes in several steep climbs and descents and can even be turned into a “bike-packing” trip, with an overnight stopover at the Black Mountain Trail Shelter.

2. Tsali Biking Trails

Tsali trails, located about an hour and a half’s drive west of Hendersonville, tend to be less eroded, more compact, and smoother than the tracks at Pisgah. This makes them a good choice for beginners, or folk who just want a more relaxing cycle away from the tough descents. While there are still some technical sections for those of a more adrenaline-fueled inclination, for the most part, riders will find these trails to be very forgiving.

3. Dupont State Recreational Forest

Located to the southwest of Hendersonville, but less than 30 minutes drive away, Dupont State Recreational forest, or DRF to locals, is another popular destination for mountain bikers of all stripes.

Again, the DRF has a large network of trails to explore, but the first on your list should be the Dupont Ridgeline Trail, a medium-difficulty trail that takes in some good ascents, before diving down the ridgeline for some fast, flowing action. For a more challenging route, try the Dupont West Side Trail, a tough ride with big climbs, big descents, and some fantastic scenery and views over the forest.

4. Sugar Mountain

Although it is a little further afield than the rest of these trails, sugar mountain resort is well worth paying a visit to if you’re heading to the Northern Mountains. A ski resort in winter, once the snows recede bikers can enjoy over 20 miles of fast downhill trails and even make use of a chair lift to get to the top, so you can maximize your time flying through those downhills.

A great starting point is the Carolina Cruiser Trail, the main downhill mountain bike trail in the resort. Starting from the top of the chairlift, it speeds its way down through a series of berms to the mountain’s foot.

This just a small selection of the amazing mountain biking to be found in this corner of North Carolina. Head outside and explore and you will soon find your favorite trail.
